Eastman Tritan™ copolyester: It’s shaping up to be a successful NPE2009

Including firsthand experience of the technical, practical and magical sides of Tritan.

With NPE2009 (The International Plastics Showcase) just around the corner, Eastman wants everyone to be prepared to hear and see a lot about Eastman Tritan™ copolyester. Since its launch in late 2007, Tritan has successfully entered a variety of markets — and products made with this innovative polymer have provided molders and designers with a new level of design flexibility, processability, and a welcome combination of consumer-preferred benefits, including glasslike clarity, toughness, dishwasher durability and freedom from bisphenol-A (BPA).

Eastman Tritan™ copolyester is an innovative polymer family that retains the versatility of copolyesters, but with the added advantages of higher heat resistance and higher impact resistance. In addition, the unique balance of performance properties and cost-effectiveness delivered by Tritan is unmatched by other engineered polymers, including polycarbonate (PC), polysulfone, amorphous nylon and some PC blends.

At NPE2009, you’ll see the many sides of Eastman Tritan™ copolyester, which combine to deliver advantages such as lower levels of residual stress; good chemical resistance; remarkable clarity; and ease of processing and thermoforming.

This innovative application of Eastman Tritan™ copolyester—the KOR One hydration vessel—is a finalist in the International Plastics Design Competition at NPE2009.

The technical side — revealed at ANTEC@NPE2009.

Experts from Eastman Chemical Company will present four individual white papers during ANTEC™ 2009 sessions for the Society of Plastics Engineers. The following papers will provide background on the development, chemistry, properties and capabilities of Eastman Tritan™ copolyester for the signs and housewares market segments:

“Eastman Tritan™ Copolyester” by Emmet Crawford — Tuesday, June 23, 2:30 p.m.

“Properties and Thermoforming of Eastman Tritan™ Copolyester for Signs” by Wayne Shih — Tuesday, June 23, 3 p.m.

“Eastman Tritan™ Copolyester for Housewares Applications” by David Porter — Tuesday, June 23, 3:30 p.m.

• “A History of Copolyester Development at Eastman Chemical Company” by Eric Moskala — Tuesday, June 23, 4 p.m.

Presentation locations will be available in the ANTEC show program.

In collaboration with the Industrial Designers Society of America (ISDA), Eastman will provide an educational presentation on how design can advance materials:

“Transforming Your Thinking About Materials” by Gaylon White — Monday, June 22, 2 p.m. in the Innovation Theater at McCormick Place.

The practical side — revealed during processing on the show floor.

Priamus, in conjunction with Eastman Chemical Company and Toshiba, will process its needle-hub medical device using Eastman Tritan™ copolyester MX711, a high-flow formulation of Tritan. The device will be processed on a Toshiba machine with Priamus integrated hotrunner control.

Technical experts from Eastman and Priamus will be on hand to answer questions about processing specifics and capabilities in the medical and other industries.

The magical side — revealed during the featured design competition.

KOR Ideas, Inc., selected Eastman Tritan™ copolyester for its innovative KOR ONE hydration vessel because of its unmatched clarity, toughness and dishwasher durability. To complement the elegant and stylish design, KOR also required a material that was BPA-free and could be molded with a thick, crystal-like base, free of unwanted gates or other interruptions.

The KOR ONE design will be featured in the International Plastics Design Competition (IPDC), sponsored by the Alliance of Plastics Processors. Awards will be presented Wednesday, June 24, in the West Hall of McCormick Place, with finalists displayed on the show floor and in the online photo gallery.
