NPE Corner
The sideshows at the big showNPE 2006, more than any NPE in recent memory, will offer a great variety of special exhibits, pavilions, conferences, and demonstrations that add value to this year’s largest trade show in the plastics industry.
Biopolymers, elastomers, moldmaking, and new and emerging technologies all are getting special attention at NPE 2006 (June 19-23, Chicago, IL). The Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI), sponsor of the show, has developed several special programs to help make your trip to Chicago a worthwhile one. Following is a review of your options.
Biopolymers’ popularity necessitates pre-NPE symposium
If you’re looking for an excuse to go to Chicago early for NPE 2006, SPI is offering something that just might do the trick. With the burgeoning biopolymers market attracting so much attention, the SPI will host the International Degradable Plastics Symposium: Status of Biobased and Synthetic Polymer Technology, June 14-17 in Chicago, just prior to NPE itself.
Presentations at the symposium will cover technology, markets, applications, and legal and regulatory issues. Topics anticipated include biobased nanocomposites, new and emerging markets and applications, processing of biobased polymers and plastics, degradable plastics terminology and standards, natural fiber composites, protein-based materials, regulatory and ecological issues, and vegetable oil polymers and composites. The event will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel adjacent to McCormick Place, which will host NPE 2006 the following week (June 19-23). Cosponsors of the symposium with the SPI are the Bio/Environmental Polymer Society (BEPS) and the Ninth World Conference on Biodegradable Polymers and Plastics (BDPP). For more information on the symposium, registration, cost, and a more detailed program, contact Nancy Jones at the SPI, 202-974-5267 or njones@socplas.org.
Elastomers pavilion and conference
Whether you’ve been in the plastics industry for 10 years or just 10 days, you likely know how important elastomers have become to consumers, OEMs, and designers. If you’re headed to NPE 2006 you’ll get a chance to become much better educated on the present and future of this important material. The SPI and the Rubber Manufacturers Assn. (RMA) are joining forces to produce an elastomers pavilion and conference at the show. Both will be organized by the RMA’s General Products Group (GPG) and will include materials and machinery developments that span the range of elastomeric polymers, including thermoset rubber and thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs).
GPG hopes the pavilion, which will be located on the upper level of the North Hall at McCormick Place, will feature more than 100 companies as exhibitors, focusing on raw materials suppliers, additives, machinery, testing instruments, and tooling for thermoplastic and thermoset technologies. The conference, developed in partnership with the Rubber Div. of the American Chemical Society and the RMA, will provide an educational program that focuses on European end-of-life regulations for automobiles, improved methods of rubber mixing and compounding, issues and technologies relating to disposal and reuse of scrap rubber, and potential growth markets for TPEs.

Moldmakers pavilion focuses on manufacture and design
In the East Hall of McCormick Place at NPE you’ll find the North American Moldmakers Pavilion, a multiexhibitor collection of firms offering attendees design and tooling solutions. Jointly sponsored by the SPI Moldmakers Div., the American Mold Builders Assn (AMBA), and the Canadian Assn. of Moldmakers (CAMM), one of the goals of the pavilion is to offer visitors exposure to a wider range of design and tooling companies than is normally found at an NPE.
In conjunction with the pavilion, MoldMaking Technology magazine is offering a conference slate that will cover mold market analysis and forecasting, rapid product development, shop management, global issues, and education and training.
